Ghazipur: Father held as neighbour reports on children bursting crackers, FIR launched

New Delhi:

A Delhi man was reportedly held by the police after his children were caught bursting firecrackers in the Ghazipur area. Complainant Deen Bandhu had objected to Damadeep’s children bursting crackers outside his house on November 1, however, when the children did not pay heed to their objections, he reported the matter to the police, who arrived soon after and took Damadeep into custody.

An FIR has been registered against the man who is likely to pay a heavy fine or spend six months in prison. It is believed that the arrest was made to send out a message to residents deterring from buying and bursting firecrackers.

However, police and officials of the forensic science laboratory are still mulling how to check whether crackers burst by the accused were ‘green’ or not, according to the Indian Express. “The accused, Damandeep, was bursting crackers outside his house when his neighbours made a call to Ghazipur police station. We sent an officer who seized the firecrackers. The accused was violating SC orders and bursting a year-old cracker. The residue will be sent to FSL for examination,” said DCP (East) Pankaj Singh.

The FSL currently examines explosives at its chemistry division, and an explosives unit will be constituted in the coming months with a dedicated explosives examination team, the official said.

Keeping in mind Delhi-NCR’s deteriorating air quality, a Supreme Court bench headed by Justice AK Sikri on October 23 had said that bursting of firecrackers will be allowed for two hours, from 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali, while on Christmas and New Year celebrations bursting between 11:45 pm to 12:30 am, the court said. “Only crackers with reduced emission will be allowed and they can be sold through licenced holders,” the judges said.

The apex court, in its order, banned the online sale of firecrackers and put a stay on the e-commerce portals from selling firecrackers.
