The Delhi Police has arrested a man for giving talaq (divorce) to his wife after pronouncing the word 'talaq' thrice to her on WhatsApp, police said on Saturday. According to reports, 29-year-old Raima Yahya got married to Atir Shamim, a resident of Azad Market area, in November, 2011.
The man divorced her wife on June 23 by pronouncing triple talaq. "On June 23, her husband pronounced talaq three times on WhatsApp. When she objected, he sent her a Fatwa on WhatsApp, issued against her," said Nupur Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).
The husband has been arrested after being booked under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, the officer said.
The law, which came into being last week, makes talaq-e-biddat or any other similar form of talaq having the effect of instantaneous and irrevocable divorce pronounced by a Muslim husband void and illegal.
