The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), is set to increase fare as a part of implementation of the second phase of fare hike. Earlier the base fare was increased from Rs 8 to Rs 10 and the upper limit was increased from Rs 30 to Rs 50.

Delhi metro has witnessed a significant decline in passenger since the last fare increase in May. According to estimates the fall is 1,50,000 passengers (per day) so it could be anticipated that there could be a further dip.

It is worthy to note that when metro service started the minimum fare was Rs 4 and the maximum was Rs 8.

The revised fare hike in fares be as follows:

  • For less than 2 kms there will be no change in fares. Between 2 and 5 kms the fare will be hiked by Rs 5 (from Rs 15 to Rs 20).
  • For all other zones fares will increase at a flat rate of Rs 10

Increase in electricity and maintenance charges coupled with salary hike of staff members are the prime reason for the fare hike, said DMRC.

It is learnt that the Metro board of directors had repeatedly turned down the request of the DMRC the proposal to increase the fare. There will be no increase in fare of Airport Express Link.
