New Delhi:

People crossing the Delhi border on Friday midnight may face long traffic jams and delays. This could be due to the rush of vehicles to get RFID tags for commercial vehicles. The deadline for mandatory RFID tagging for commercial vehicles ends at midnight of August 23.

While around 1.5 lakh vehicles have been tagged so far, Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) have said that the deadline for pre-registration of RFID tags and recharge of tags will not be extended beyond August 23.

After the deadline expires, non-RFID tag vehicles will be forced to pay twice the basic amount of environment compensation charge (ECC). The ECC tax for non-tagged vehicles will be charged at four times the basic rate in the second week after the deadline, and it will rise to six times in the subsequent week.

Where to get RFID tags and recharge

SDMC has set up permanent points of sale at 13 entry points/RFID toll plazas for pre-registration. Additional six points have been set up in satellite towns of UP and Haryana.

These points are -- Tikri Main, Bahadurgarh Bypass Road, Near New Bus Stand Haryana; Indian Oil Petrol Pump, Near Biswa Mill, GT Karnal Road, Kundli Sonepat, Haryana; GT Road, Anand Industrial Estate, Mohan Nagar, in front of ITS College, Ghaziabad; Sector-1, Heritage Village Resort, Maneswar Police Station, NH-8, Maneswar, Haryana; NH 24 Bridge, UP Gate, Ghaziabad; and NHAI & MCD Toll Tax Badarpur Haryana Border near Bharti Petrol Pump, Agra Road, Badarpur Delhi.

How does the RFID tag work

With the help of RFID tags, the toll is automatically deducted from the linked e-wallets. This system has been put in place to reduce traffic congestion across the various entry points of Delhi. This, in turn, will help in the reduction of pollution. Under the RFID system, the tax will be collected automatically by reading radio frequency-based identity tag.
