BJP councillor Avtar Singh, who was elected unopposed as the new mayor of North Delhi on Monday, had a very humble beginning as a tea seller. He was nominated for the post by Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari. “Singh is a very hard-working BJP cadre. He has used his hard work to reach to the post of mayor from his humble beginning as a tea seller,” said a senior Delhi BJP leader.

Singh said he worked at a five-star hotel in Delhi as a bellboy for two years starting 1989, after which he decided to launch his own small business. “I sold tea under a Peepal tree for 10 years,” he said. He also tried his hand in other businesses like a courier service.

Singh joined the RSS at the age of seven, and worked for the organisation even when he was struggling. He has also performed several roles in the Ramlila.

The term of mayor is for one year. The third term of the five-year tenure of the corporation is reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates to become mayor. Singh is the first Sikh Scheduled Caste leader to assume the office.

Earlier, Anju Kangra, BJP councilor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation was elected mayor of the civic body.

Anju Kamlakar, BJP councilor, is also stated to be elected unopposed as new mayor of East Delhi Municipal Corporation ruled by the party. The election of mayor is indirect in which councilors of the civic body participate. The BJP has a majority in NDMC.
