One of the accused in Gurugram family assault case was arrested while six others detained in connection with the brutal attack, Himanshu Garg, DCP south Gurugram said on Saturday. Speaking to news agency ANI, Garg said that a game of cricket led the altercation and they have registered an FIR against the accused persons. "We've registered an FIR on basis of statements of complainants; 1 accused has been arrested who's being interrogated; the further probe is underway. Some ppl were playing cricket in the playground on March 21, a ball hit someone which led to an altercation," Garg said.
The incident took place on Thursday evening when a group of men barged into the house of a family, belonging to the minority community, and started beating them black and blue with sticks. A video of the incident that went viral on social media shows some people carrying sticks brutally assaulting the family's male members while the women pleaded them to stop. At least 14 members of the joint family, included children as young as two-year-old, were injured in the attack.
The police have deployed security outside the house of the family and appealed the people living in the area to maintain peace and harmony. "We are constantly in touch with the victims, we have enhanced the police presence in the area; there is no need to fear. I would like to make an appeal to the people living in that area to live peacefully and maintain harmony," DCP Garg said.
Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress launched a blistering attack against the Narendra Modi government over the incident and asked whether this would be the prime minister's "new India". The party also demanded strict action against the perpetrators.
