Former Congress MLA Asif Khan, named in the FIR filed in connection with Jamia Millia Islamia violence, attempted to surrender before the Delhi Police on Wednesday afternoon. However, the police refused to take him into custody. According to Khan, police told him that there was some error in the FIR and the crime branch is investigating the matter. He will not be arrested till the completion of the investigation.
Khan alleged that he has been framed. "They are accusing me of calling instigating violence after my video went viral. Police is to blame for the violence. I worked to establish peace."
Delhi Police had named Asif Khan as one of the accused in its FIR related to the violence that broke out in Jamia University on Sunday. Seven people, including four local politicians and the former Congress MLA, were named as suspects in the Delhi Police FIR related to Jamia violence on Sunday.
In its FIR, police had said some politicians and a few members of student unions were leading the protest march on Sunday. "In the last two to three days, an ex-MLA and local politician were seen instigating local protesters. These two men were raising slogans against the NRC and CAA," an official said.
A Delhi court had on Tuesday sent 10 people, arrested in connection with protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) near Jamia Millia Islamia University here, to judicial custody till December 31. Police had arrested them on Monday for alleged involvement in violence near Jamia and said none of them were students.
