A man allegedly committed suicide by jumping before Delhi Metro train at Noida’s Sector-61 station on Tuesday. Initial reports say that the man used to work as a security guard. The service on the busy Blue Line was partially affected. Confirming the incident, the DMRC also informed about it on Twitter. “Delay in services between Akshardham and Noida Electronic City due to a passenger on track at Noida Sector 61. Normal service on all other lines,” the DMRC said on micro-blogging site. After an hour, the normal services were resumed. This is the second incident within 48 hours.
On Monday, a woman ended her life by jumping before Delhi Metro train at Jhandewalan Station. The reasons for the suicide by the 40-year-old were not clear. The news of the suicide was also confirmed by officials. Delhi Metro had earlier tweeted about the service disruption in morning. “Blue Line Update Delay in services between Indraprastha and Kirti Nagar due to a passenger on track at Jhandewalan. Normal service on all other lines,” the official Twitter handle of Delhi metro posted on micro-blogging site. Last month also, a 25-year-old married woman allegedly killed herself by jumping in front of a metro train at a Yellow Line station.
Metro stations in Delhi are increasingly turning into suicide zones. According to a reply to an RTI filed by the Indian Express, 83 people allegedly committed suicide across 58 Delhi Metro stations in the period of last four years. The maximum number of suicides (32) were reported from the longest and busiest Blue Line, which has 44 Metro stations stretching over 50.56 km, starting from Dwarka Sector 21 and ending at Noida City Centre, the Indian Express report said.
A report by The Hindu said that the CISF, which is responsible for the security at the metro stations, were able to control the number of such incidents. With spike in suicides, the security personnel are resorting to new measures to prevent such cases.
“Apart from round the clock CCTV surveillance, we have started training our officials to keep an eye on passengers showing signs of depression and anger. Our officials move around in plain clothes and are trained to stop such incidents,” a CISF spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
To keep a tab on the growing attempts, Delhi Metro has also constituted a special wing to counsel people reportedly spotted with suicidal tendencies. Platform screen doors are being set up in six stations — Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, Kashmere Gate, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk, and Central Secretariat.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was established by the Government of India and the Government of Delhi in March 1995 for building a new metro system in the capital. The project was carried out in phases including phase one (65.11km) and phase two (124.9km).
