This step has been taken by the NGT keeping in view the composition of particulate matter in the air. Diesel is considered a big contributor to the pollution levels in Delhi-NCR.
Recently, Delhi and satellite towns in the NCR were under heavy blanket of smog that threw normal life out of gear. Stubble burning in Punjab only added to the pollution levels choking Delhi-ites who preferred to stay indoors.
The NGT had in its earlier orders directed the Delhi government to come up with solutions to tackle smog like conditions in the city. It also raised objections to Kejriwal government’s plan to launch season 3 of odd-even scheme owing to which the Delhi government had to abandon the plan for the time being.
Particulate matter is the total composition of solid and liquid particles such as dust, pollen, soot, smoke, and liquid droplets. suspended in air many of which are hazardous.Â
