Robot Remedy: At AIIMS a robo arm helps docs in neurosurgeries

At AIIMs, now a robot arm will perform the complicated neurosurgeries by enabling doctors analyse brain dysfunctions accurately and identifying the part to be treated.

While robots have been in use by doctors and specialists to operate on patients with urology problems, gynaecological and cardiac problems, it is the first time that this machine will be used in brain operations.

Brain robot is the machine that has been installed at All India Institute of Medical Sciences recently which will help doctors to perform brain surgeries with precision by making a small hole inside the patient's brain. The machine is then inserted inside the brain and the robot identifies the spot which requires treatment.

"Earlier experts at AIIMS performed surgeries manually using stereo tactic frame. But the robotic arm, an European technology originally, has helped identify exact spot of bother for providing better treatment. The surgeries are being conducted free of cost," a doctor attached to neurosurgery division at AIIMS said.Around 60 robotics neurosurgeries have been conducted at the hospital over the past few months, the doctor informed.
