In another step towards ending the protests at Shaheen bagh in Delhi, a delegation of protesters will be taken to meet Delhi LG Anil Baijal on Tuesday. According to reports, Delhi Police has facilitated this meeting as part of efforts to resolve the issue. Several people, including women and children, are sitting in protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act for more than a month now. The sit-in has caused one of main routes connecting Delhi and Noida to remain closed.
The protesters have set up a stage on the carriageway towards Noida from Sarita Vihar on the road, which has prompted the police to close all traffic towards Noida and Delhi. Protesters have also blocked the opposite carriageway going to Delhi from Noida. Delhi police has been making efforts to persuade protesters to end the protest using laudspeaker appeals to back-door meetings. Delhi Police has also been using Twitter to request the protesters to clear the road.
Delhi High Court on January 14 had said that no direction can be issued by it on how to handle an agitation or the place of protest and the traffic as it depended on ground reality and wisdom of police. The high court had reiterated its order to the police on January 17 directing the force to look into the traffic situation in Shaheen Bagh.
