Why Delhi Police Personnel Staged Protest? Here Are Their Demands

The protest of Delhi Police personnel ended on Tuesday evening after senior officers assured that all demands of the agitating cops will be fulfilled. Earlier, Delhi Police Joint Commission Devesh Srivastava urged the protesting cops to maintain calm and assured them that all their grievances will be heard. "If you have faith in senior officers, your demands will be fulfilled. Injured cops are receiving best possible treatment," Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police Devesh Srivastava said.

Delhi top cop, Amulya Patnaik also urged the protesting police personnel to return to work after hundreds of them gathered outside the old Delhi Police headquarters at ITO to register their protest against incidents of violence against the force.

The protests came a day after a policeman on duty was allegedly assaulted by a group of lawyers at Saket District Court premises in New Delhi. Last Saturday, a parking row between between police personnel and lawyers on Saturday had escalated leading to violence and arson at the Tis Hazari Court complex.

Addressing the protesting police personnel, Delhi Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik said, "In last few days, there have been certain incidents in the capital which we handled very well. The situation is improving after that. I appeal to all to maintain peace. It’s testing time for us."

"We have to behave like a disciplined force. The government and the people expect us to uphold the law, it is our big responsibility. I urge you to resume duty," Patnaik told the police personnel, adding that their concerns will be addressed.

Here are some of the demands of the cops:

  • Delhi Police’s protesting personnel demanded that the licences of lawyers who assaulted their colleagues be revoked
  • Protesting cops demanded transfer of the officers involved in the Tis Hazari clash rescinded.
  • The protesting police personnel demanded that Delhi Police challenge the Delhi High Court order in the Supreme Court against the suspension order of senior policemen Special Commissioner of Police Sanjay Singh and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Harinder Singh.
