The lure of money, unwanted pregnancy, fear of society, an unwed teenage mother, blatant flouting of medical rules and ethics, all these factors resulted in the tragic death of a 19-year-old engineering student in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana.

The victim was seven months pregnant and had visited the Anusha Maternity Hospital and Nursing Home, Vanasthalipuram on August 5 along with her boyfriend to carry out Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), or abortion informed the sources.

The police have filed a case against the concerned doctor Girija Rani who had charged Rs 20,000 to carry out the procedure. The girl's boyfriend Madhu S, 21, and the doctor have been taken into custody for further interrogation after the girl's father Mahesh Kalluri filed a complaint.

Vanasthalipuram police station sub inspector Dharavath Vijay said, "She was administered a pill on admission, following which the foetus was aborted. The girl, however, experienced heavy bleeding and fell unconscious. Later the doctor asked her boyfriend to shift her to another hospital where she was declared brought dead."

On Monday, August 7, her body was shifted to Osmania Hospital for an autopsy. The police approached the district medical health officer (DMHO) to check if Anusha Maternity Hospital and Nursing Home has the mandatory certification to conduct abortions. The investigators are also probing if the doctor violated guidelines laid down by the Indian Medical Council while performing the procedure.

The girl was a second-year student of an engineering college in Ibrahimpatnam and was living at a private hostel at D N Reddy Nagar.

"She had met her photographer boyfriend at a function over a year ago and later entered into a relationship with him. The girl's parents were unaware of her pregnancy or her admission to the hospital for abortion," informed a police officer.
