Eight people were arrested on charges of bovine smugglers and rescued more than 100 bovines, which were being transported illegally in Jammu district, police said on Sunday.
The rescued animals were found laden in vehicles, it said.
The police acting on a tip-off intercepted trucks at a toll plaza on a highway in the outskirts of Jammu and recovered over 100 bovines, they said.
Eight people have been arrested and a case has been registered, the police said.

Earlier on Monday, an alleged notorious bovine smuggler was detained in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district under Public Safety Act (PSA), police said.
"Mohammad Amin was found involved in bovine smuggling and thus threatening the peaceful atmosphere forcing authorities to detain him under the PSA," police said.
According to police, Amin has been lodged in the Central Jail Kot Bhalwal in Jammu.
