Under-construction bridge collapses at South 24 Parganas in West Bengal

An under-construction bridge collapsed in the Kakdwip area of South 24 Parganas district on Monday, a senior official said.

There has been no report of any casualty, but one person has been injured in the midhap, South 24 Parganas district magistrate Y Ratnakara Rao said.

This is the third incident of bridge collapse in the state in September.“The incident happened on Monday morning. We are waiting for further details,” the district magistrate said. A team has been rushed to the spot to investigate the matter, he said.

Majerhat Bridge in south Kolkata had collapsed on September 4, killing three persons and injuring 24. This had thrown normal life out of gear in the City of Joy as train services and vehicular traffic were disrupted.

Another bridge had collapsed near Siliguri in north Bengal leaving a truck driver injured on September 7. The bridge connects the Manganj and Phansidewa areas to Siliguri, a major city in north Bengal.
