New Delhi :

A pregnant woman was allegedly strangled to death on a train near Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh for objecting to a co-passenger smoking on Friday, a senior railway official said.

Chinat Devi (45), was travelling with her family in the general bogey of the Punjab-Bihar Jallianwala Express when she objected to a co-passenger smoking AK Pandey, the GRP police station in-charge, Shahjahanpur, said.

After a heated argument, the accused identified as Sonu Yadav attacked Chintan Devi and strangled her, Pandey said, adding that the train was stopped at Shahjahanpur and the woman was rushed to a hospital where the doctors declared her dead on arrival.

The deceased and her family were on their way to Bihar for the Chhat puja festivities, Pandey said, adding that the accused was arrested and the Chintan Devi’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination.
