Protesters torched 15 vehicles after a demonstration against Citizenship Amendment Act and police action against students of Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia turned violent in Uttar Pradesh's Mau on Monday, prompting the police to fire in the air. The incident occurred in the Dakshintola area of Mau. Section 144 has been imposed in the Hajipur Chowk area.
“Few people who had gathered T Hajipura to hold protest over yesterday's Jamia Millia Islamia incident, have been disbursed. Few motorbikes were torched by them. The situation is peaceful now. Section 144 has been imposed in Hajipura Chowk area,” Gyan Prakash Tripathi, DM Mau, said.
Police used tear gas shells and also fired in the air to control the situation after protestors set ablaze 15 vehicles, including those of police.
Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said senior officials are on the spot. Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh said the situation is completely under control.
“The situation in Mau is completely under control now. The administration is keeping a close watch on the situation,” Singh said.
