The Uttar Pradesh Police has issued a challan of Rs 6,100 to the Congress worker who gave a pillion ride to Priyanka Gandhi in Lucknow on Saturday. According to reports, Dheeraj Gurjar, who is a Congress Secretary, was issued the challan for riding the two-wheeler without a helmet. Priyanka rode the scooter as she gave cops the slip to reach former IPS office SR Darapuri's residence. Priyanka Gandhi was on her way to Darapuri's, accompanied by several other Congress leaders, when she was stopped by the police at Lohia Path in the Uttar Pradesh capital. She then hitched a ride on the two-wheeler driven by Gurjar.
Both Priyanka and Gurjar were not wearing helmets and were found violating traffic norms. They were again stopped at the Polytechnic Square and Priyanka walked to ex-IPS officer's residence from there. She later alleged that she was manhandled by the police and 'grabbed by the neck for no reason'.
Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday slammed the Uttar Pradesh government over the arrest of party worker Sadaf Zafar during protests against the new citizenship law and said it has crossed all limits of inhumanity by "levelling baseless allegations" against the social activist.
Zafar was arrested here on December 19 while she was live on Facebook from the spot where protests against the amended citizenship law had gone violent. Police said she was arrested for her involvement in clashes.
"Uttar Pradesh government has crossed all limits of inhumanity. Congress worker Sadaf Zafar in a video can be clearly seen telling policemen to arrest those indulging in violence. The police has levelled baseless allegations on Sadaf and put her in jail," Priyanka Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.
The Congress leader said Zafar's children were eagerly waiting for her release. "This insensitive government has separated children from their mother and the older generation from their children," she added.
