As many as 64 people have been detained and 71 vehicles were challaned in a major crackdown on vehicles plying illegally in Amethi, police said Friday.
Among those detained during the traffic drive conducted Thursday was an accused in a double murder case, on whom the National Security Act (NSA) was slapped earlier, they said.

“In a special drive launched by the Amethi police against illegally plying vehicles on roads, a vehicle was seized while another 71 were challaned under the Motor Vehicles Act,” PRO of SP, Amethi, said in a press release.
“Rs 9,100 was also recovered from the persons concerned with warning that such campaigns will be continued in public interest,” Amethi SP Anurag Arya said.
The 64 detainees were later presented before a court, he said.

During the drive, Shiv Kumar, an accused wanted in a double murder case and booked under the NSA, was also detained.
Kumar is a resident of Pure Tejai-Ratapur village under the Piparpur police station. He was accused of double murder and was wanted under Sections 302, 307 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code, police said.
