An accused in a 2006 rioting case in Bhiwandi township in Maharashtra’s Thane district, in which two policemen were lynched by a mob, has been arrested, police said on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone II, Manoj Patil told PTI that Mohammad Yusuf, an accused in the rioting case, was arrested on Saturday from Bhiwandi.

On July 5, 2006, riots broke out in Bhiwandi after local residents opposed the construction of a police station on a 2,000 square metre plot near Quarter Gate Masjid.

Two policemen, identified as Ramesh Jagtap and Balasaheb Gangurde, were lynched by a rioting mob.

Two persons were killed in police firing. Over 30 State Transport buses were also torched during the riots.
