At least five people, including a pedestrian, were killed after a chartered plane crashed in near an under-construction building in Mumbai's Ghatkopar on Thursday. Two pilots and as many flight engineers on board and a pedestrian were killed in the crash, police said.

The chartered plane, a King Air C90 12-seater aircraft, which took off from the Juhu airstrip on a test flight, crashed near Sarvodaya Nagar area in Ghatkopar.

The police, fire brigade and disaster management teams rushed to spot and bodies of deceased were being shifted to a nearby hospital.

"Our control room got a call at 1.15 pm informing a plane crash. Our jawans were immediately rushed to the site to launch the rescue operation.  Four fire engines and as many water tankers were rushed to douse the fire that occurred after the plane crashed,” PTI quoted a fire brigade official as saying.

A team of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) officials also reached to the spot to investigate the incident. Reasons behind the plane crash were being ascertained by the DGCA officials.

Initial reports said that the aircraft belonged to the Uttar Pradesh government. However, the UP Government later clarified that it had sold the plane to UY Aviation in 2014.

A thick black smoke was seen rising above the crash site near Sarvodaya Nagar area in Ghatkopar.
