A baby, whose mother was not allowed to end her pregnancy at 27 weeks by Supreme Court died in Mumbai a fortnight ago.

The 28-year old woman had sought permission from the apex court to abort the foetus after it was diagnosed from Arnold Chiari Type II syndrome in her 27th week of pregnancy.

The malformed baby boy was born with this neurological disorder on July 4 and placed in the neonatal ward's intensive care unit.

Children born with this disorder have a little chance of survival, as per doctors. The rate of survival is very less and stands at 1.2-2 per 1,000 deaths.

Supreme court had rejected the woman's plea and stated that the baby could be ‘born alive’. She approached the court because the law prohibits abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy. The plea was rejected after the court sought the opinion of doctors at KEM Hospital.

It is being reported that women and her husband earlier wanted to abandon the baby, but took him home once doctors and police officials counselled them.
