Two people have been booked by the Thane police for selling t-shirts with prints of the national flag.

Thane police on Sunday booked two man for allegedly selling T-shirts with the Tricolour printed on them. The duo identified as Jalinder Karlikar and Amar Adargi reported to be from Dombivali were booked following complaints by an organisation called Hindu Janajgruti Samiti.

Senior Inspector V M Pawar of Dombivali police station said that the t-shirts with prints of the national flag have been seized.

A police official said display of the national flag is governed by the provisions of Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950, the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 and the Flag Code of India, 2002.

The Flag Code attempts to bring together all laws, conventions, practices and instructions related to the Tricolour.

The officials also added that the Tricolour, which is the nation’s identity is exempted from being used as a part of any costume or uniform nor shall it be embroidered or printed upon cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins or any dress material.
