In yet another incident of dilapidated building collapse in Maharashtra, a portion of a five-storey building crashed near Mumbai's suburban Khar on Tuesday afternoon. As per the latest report, a 10-year-old girl, Mahi Motvani, who was trapped in the debris of the partially collapsed building, has been declared brought dead at Lilavati Hospital. The devastated structure is identified as Pooja building at 17th Road at Khar West. However, no injury or loss of life has been reported in the incident till the time.
The mishap took place at around 2.20 pm when part of a staircase of the residential building, located near Khar Gymkhana, collapsed. Soon after the incident, all the agencies, including fire brigade, police and ambulance service hurried to the spot.

Speaking to the media, a fire brigade official said, "No casualty has been reported so far," adding that efforts are underway to clear the debris". A rescue team was trying to ascertain if anyone was trapped under the rubble, he stated.
Four fire engines along with rescue vans, an ambulance, local civic officials, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and police personnel are currently present at the spot and have been put on service to clear the site. The reason behind what may have resulted in the collapse is yet to be ascertained.
Building collapses in Mumbai, home to around 20 million people, have become very frequent, specially in the monsoon season, with rickety structures buckling under the weight of continuous rain.
In the last five years, as many as 234 people have died and 840 have got injured in incidents related to building collapses across the city.
