Assam: 11 injured after explosion inside Kamakhya-Dekargaon Intercity Express, say reports

At least 11 persons were injured after an explosion inside one of the coaches in Kamakhya-Dekargaon Intercity Express in Assam's Udalguri, according to reports. Soon after the incident, Railway and police officials have rushed to the site, around 95 km from Guwahati. All of the injured persons were shifted to a hospital. However, no casualties have been reported into the incident so far.

"Assam: Explosion inside one of the coaches in Kamakhya-Dekargaon Intercity Express in Udalguri. 11 persons injured," the news agency ANI reported.

The explosion occurred at the Harisinga railway station around 6:45 pm and the investigation is underway to ascertain if it was a bomb, the polie told ANI.  Keeping in mind the precautionary measure, the passengers were evacuated from the affected train following the blast.

Prima facie, the explosion is said to be caused by a grenade or an improvised explosive device (IED). However, the actual reason behind the blast is yet to be ascertained.

Briefing the media about preliminary investigations, PRO of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Nripen Bhattacharya said, "It hasn't yet been confirmed whether it was bomb blast or short circuit blast. No casualties have taken place".

The explosion followed the killing of five Bengali-speaking men by suspected ULFA(I) terrorists in Assam's Tinsukia district on November 1. On Novwmber 22, the terrorists also carried out a powerful grenade attack in Demow town, leaving two people dead and several others injured. 

However, the ULFA (I), the banned terrorist outfit, which stepped up its activities across Assam, has denied its involvement in the incidents.
