New Delhi:

In yet another blow to the Congress in the Northeast, veteran Congress leader and former Meghalaya chief minister DD Lapang resigned from the party on Friday.

In his resignation letter to party president Rahul Gandhi, Lapang cited All India Congress Committee’s policy of phasing out seniors in the party as the main reason behind his decision.

“Lately the AICC has been embarking upon a policy of phasing out senior and elderly people. In my opinion it means the service and contribution of the senior and elderly people is no longer useful to the party,” Lapang stated in his resignation letter.

Four time CM of Meghalaya, Lapang was first elected to the state assembly in 1972 from the Nongpoh assembly seat as an independent candidate.
