New Delhi:

Noted Malayalam poet Paloor Madhavn Namboodir passed away at 86 at his Kozhikode residence, family source said on Tuesday.

Paloor, a recipient of various honours, including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award, passed away after a prolong age-related ailments, they added.

Known for his finest Malayalam poems of the latter half of the 20th century, historian and poets defined Paloor as a ‘modernist poet’, said sources.

His poems traced the sufferings of mankind involving all the complexities of a highly urbanised system, it added.

In 2013, Paloor was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his autobiography ‘Kathayillathavante Katha’, according to sources.

He was also honoured the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, the state’s highest literary honour, in 1983 for his collection ‘Kalikalam’, they said.

Moreover, in 2009, the modernist poet was awarded the Asan Prize for poetry, an award given to Malayalam writers by Asan Memorial Association since 1989, said the sources.

Some of his major collections, include ‘Kalikalam’, ‘Pedithondan’, ‘Theerthayathra’and ‘Bhangiyum Abhangiyum’.

Born on June 22, 1932, Paloor learnt Sanskrit under renowned Sanskrit scholar K.P. Narayana Pisharody, it said.
