New Delhi:

The Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector, who has been suspended and an enquiry has been ordered, recounted the Mukherjee Nagar incident where a case of road rage turned into an ugly street fight.

On Sunday, a group of policemen in Mukherjee Nagar were seen thrashing the tempo driver, identified as Sarabjeet Singh. The video of the incident went viral on social media. A number of people gathered outside the police station in solidarity with Singh and demanded sacking of all the police officers who were involved in the alleged incident. The area where the incident occurred remained tense.

Three policemen including two assistant sub inspectors have been suspended for their unprofessional conduct in handling the matter, the police said.

"Meri koi galti nahi hai (I am not at fault)," said ASI Yograj. "ASI Devender was on ERV (emergency response vehicle) duty. The tempo driver’s vehicle touched the ERV. There was scuffle, following which they came to the police station. The police stopped him, which worsened the situation. He then brandished his sword and threatened us to stay away," Yograj said as quoted by News18.

When the incident occurred, Yograj was inside the police station. He was asked to send more personnel as a man on the road had taken out a sword. “When I came out of the police station, there was a different scene on the road… Sardar ji was waving his sword and running towards the policemen who were trying to retreat,” he said.

He overpowered the man but his son started hitting him. Yograj said he held onto Sarabjeet despite being attacked. “He first attacked my leg with the sword and the second time he attacked my head, leading to injuries. Despite that, I didn’t let him go as he could have attacked other people too,” he said.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Northern Range) Manish Kumar Agarwal  is separately conducting a detailed inquiry into the matter.

In one of the purported videos, the tempo driver was seen chasing the policemen with a sword. In another video, they were seen thrashing the driver while overpowering him.

The police said the altercation between took place after the tempo driver’s vehicle collided with a police van.
