Aspiring to be doctor, nurse tries to extort Rs 1 crore from Gurugram businessman, arrested

A 20-year-old nurse was arrested by the Gurugram Police on Thursday for allegedly trying to extort Rs 1 crore ransom from a businessman. According to a report by The Hindustan Times, the nurse was a graduate from a good university and wanted to become a doctor. Inspired by crime shows on TV, she hatched a plan with help of a history-sheeter, who was known to one of her relative’s husband.

The HT report said that the nurse was employed by the businessman for just 25 days last year. The nurse, who was employed as a caretaker by the businessman, decided to make a list and extort money as she wanted to fund her education. Coming from a family with eight siblings, the 20-year-old knew that her father doesn’t have the money for her higher education.

This is when she got in touch with the history-sheeter, who arranged SIM cards and a weapon for the extortion. Together, they made list of 10 people, whom they would target for the ransom.

“Both the accused made several rounds of the area, where the victim lived. They bought new SIM cards to make ransom calls. The woman made a list of 10 people from whom she could extort money and targeted the victim out of those, as she thought he would easily agree to pay the ransom,” Gurugram Police commissioner Muhammad Akil was quoted as saying by The HT.

On July 8, the history-sheeter called the businessman saying that one Fiza Khan had asked him to kidnap his son. If the businessman wants his son safe, he must pay Rs 1 crore ransom. At first, the businessman didn’t pay heed, but after 20 such calls, he approached the police. A case under IPC sections 384 (extortion), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) was registered against the unidentified man.

Engaged to a hospital executive, the woman was encouraged by her fiancé to pursue higher studies. “The woman was arrested from Atul Kataria Chowk and Khan was arrested from Iffco Chowk on Thursday,” ACP (crime) Shamsher Singh  was quoted as saying.
