In a bizarre sequence of events, Navratri turned tragic for this family in Bareilly. A couple, in the Rajepur village in the Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, committed suicide after a heated argument over cooking chicken for dinner during Navratri.
The husband, who was allegedly drunk, wanted to eat chicken for dinner but his wife refused to cooking the same owing to Navratri. The man has been identified as Anand Vihari Verma and his wife Phoolmati. After his wife refused to cook chicken for him, the man allegedly entered the kitchen and started cooking. Phoolmati flew into a rage and an argument broke out. She then consumed poison. After the husband realised that his wife was dead, he also committed suicide by consuming poison.
Verma and Phoolmati were parents to three children. The daughter of the deceased lived in the Sitapur district while the sons have jobs in other districts.
The police said that the daughter of the deceased had received a call from her father stating that her mother had committed suicide by consuming poison. Following this, the daughter informed her uncle who lived nearby, the ToI reported.
Though the uncle rushed the woman to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead on arrival. The husband died while he was being treated at the hospital. The Station House Officer (SHO) Mitauli police station Fateh Singh said that Verma had hurt Phoolmati’s sentiments by challenging her beliefs and forcing her to cook chicken.
