New Delhi:

A young research scholar from the Jadavpur University in Kolkata committed suicide on Sunday and was found hanging from the ceiling fan at her residence in the Jadavpur area, the police said. The 26-year-old woman had been identified as Sukanya Poddar, who was a post graduate in microbiology and was associated with research at the Jadavpur University. She also used to work as a part-time lecturer in a college. She was engaged to get married later this year. She lived with her family on the second floor of a three-storey apartment on the Baghajatin Station Road under the Jadavpur Police Station limits, the police said.

Her family members, who were visibly in a state of shock, said that they didn’t notice anything abnormal or untoward in Sukanya’s behaviour when she woke up on Sunday morning, however, she went to her room at around 10 am and never came out. Sometime later, they found the door of the room closed from inside. When she did not open the door despite repeated knocks, the family members alerted their neighbours who broke open the door only to find Sukanya hanging from the ceiling at 11.50 am. The police were informed and Sukanya was rushed to the nearby MR Bangur and Hospital where she was declared brought dead on arrival by doctors. The post-mortem examination report is awaited.

“We found the woman hanging from the ceiling fan with her face covered in a black scarf. The body was found at around 11.50 am and was rushed to the nearby MR Bangur and Hospital where she was declared brought dead on arrival by doctors. We are looking into the matter,” the police added. However, they said that the position of the body initially surprised them as they wondered why she had covered her face with a black scarf before ending her life. A suicide note was found in the room but it didn’t name anyone and she didn’t hold no one responsible for taking the drastic step.
