A 25-year-old man and his female friend, 21, shot themselves dead in Punjab's Sangrur on Wendesday night, the police said. The couple livestreamed their suicide on social media. According to the police, the incident took place on Wednesday night in Gujjran village, about four kilometres away from Dirba town of Punjab's Sangrur district.
The bodies were found lying in a pool of blood in the fields at the village. While the cause of their joint suicide was not clear, the police said that they were unmarried and their families denied having information about any possible relationship between them.
The man, identified as Arvinder Singh, aka Bunty, was 12th pass and the woman, Harbans Kaur, was a BA final year student. Dirba DSP William Jeji said that while the man was Jat Sikh, the woman belonged to the scheduled caste.

Both shot themselves dead with a 12 bore rifle, the DSP said, adding that the video of the incident has gone viral on WhatsApp and other social media platforms.
The DSP said that after recording statements of their families, police has initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC and the bodies have been sent to the Sangrur Civil Hospital for autopsy.
