A 23-year-old woman was allegedly kidnapped and raped by four men, police said on Sunday. The incident took place on Saturday in Jhaberpur village which comes under the jurisdiction of Purkazi police station. The victim was kidnapped by four men in a car who took her to a nearby sugarcane field and raped her, said SSP Virender Singh.

The accused had also recorded the act, he said, adding that a probe into the matter was underway.

Earlier, a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping and brutally killing a seven-year-old girl when she was her way to a temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj on April 8. The police said the man first raped the girl and then brutally killed her, with the postmortem report confirming that 12 of her bones were found broken.  

Uttar Pradesh is one of the most unsafe states for women in the country, Cases of crime against children witnessed an 889 per cent increase from 10,814 in 2001 to 106,958 in 2016. During these 16 years, a total of 595,089 cases of crime against children have been registered. With 95,324 cases, Madhya Pradesh (16 per cent) seems to be the most unsafe city for children.

Uttar Pradesh comes close second, contributing 15 per cent of the total cases. Maharashtra and Delhi are in third and fourth position respectively, according to a report by DownToEarth.
