The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded every year, to an author, whose work in the words of Alfred Nobel, is the most outstanding work in the field of literature. The laurel, which is known as the world's most prestigious literature prize, draws a lot of interest.
People from all over the world were eagerly waiting to know the name of the winner for this year, but they will now have to wait till 2019. The Swedish Academy which handles the Nobel Prize in Literature has postponed the award till next year.
The organisation has come under a lot of scrutiny and received criticism for struggling to cope up with its image of a distinguished advocate of literary excellence.
The Swedish Academy has said that the laurel won’t be given this year following allegations of sexual abuse and other issues which have damaged the body’s reputation.
The Academy on Friday informed that the prize for 2018 would given next year. The decision was taken at a weekly meeting in in Stockholm on the grounds that the organisation was in no shape to choose a winner after a string of scandals and allegations.
The Swedish Academy in a statement said "The decision was arrived at in view of the currently diminished Academy and the reduced public confidence in the Academy.''
This will be the first time since wartime 1943 that Nobel Prize in Literature won't be handed out.
