On the occassion of Guru Purninma, 'to highlight the importance of teachers in our lives' Union Minister of Human Resource Development (HRD) has launched a campaign, ‘Selfie with Guru’ on July 15.Â
The HRD Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank through a video message has asked students and teachers to click a selfie with their teacher or 'Guru' and upload their picture on social media platforms with hashtag #SelfiewithGuru.
He said, “To mark the occasion of Guru Purnima, if people publish their selfie with anyone whom they consider to be their guru and express their gratitude, respect towards them, then the guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) culture of India will revive.†In a recorded message in Hindi, he said, “Guru can be anyone who inspired you to do better in life.â€

Vyasa Purnima, also known as Guru Purnima, holds immense significance for Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. Observed on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadha, between June and July, the auspicious day is celebrated by honouring teachers. Disciples offer Puja and pay respects to their Gurus. As per Buddhists beliefs, Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon on this day and hence the day is also known as Buddha Purnima.
According to the Hindu scriptures, on this day, Ved Vyas was born. One of the most noted sages according to Hindu mythology, Ved Vyas the author of mega epic ‘Mahabharata’. He not only authored it, Ved Vyas also played a crucial role in the narrative of the lives and times of royal family of Hastinapur. Ved Vyas is also known as the author of 18 Hindu ‘Purans’. In 2019, Guru Purnima falls on July 16.
