HRD Ministry rules out plan to rank Kendriya Vidyalayas

New Delhi:

Minister of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha on Monday ruled out government’s plan to rank Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in the country.

“No such proposal is under consideration at present to rank the Kendriya Vidyalayas,” Kushwaha told the Lok Sabha.

Earlier, there were reports that the HRD Ministry was considering a plan to rank over 1,000 Kendriya Vidyalayas in the country on the lines of colleges and universities.

The ministry officials had said that the KVs would be ranked in four categories after an assessment under seven parameters, including academic performance.

It was said that the move was taken after the directions of HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar with an aim at improving the educational quality in Kendriya Vidyalayas.

The Kendriya Vidyalayas are central government schools in the country instituted under the aegis of the Human Resource Development Ministry.

# With total 1,140 schools in India and abroad, Kendriya Vidyalaya is one of the world’s largest chain of schools. 

# Out of the total 1140 schools, while 1,137 are in India, three schools are being operated abroad.

# The three Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) outside India are located in Kathmandu (Nepal), Moscow (Russia), and Tehran (Iran).

# The Kendriya Vidyalayas comprises a total of 1,227,951 students (as of March 31, 2017) and 56,445 employees, including teachers and other staff were working on the payrolls (as of September 1, 2013).
