New Delhi:

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited applications for the Maulana Azad National Fellowship (MANF) for minority students for the year 2018-19. The last date to apply for the fellowship is December 31. This scheme is for communities like Muslim, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian. These communities can pursue higher studies such as regular and full-time research degrees in Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Engineering and Technology. The reservation for differently abled students shall be made as per provision laid down by the Government of India. After the gap of two years, the government has announced 1,000 scholarships for minorities.

How to apply:

  1. Log on to the official website, https://ugc.ac.in/manf/
  2. Click on the link, 'UGC Public Notice reg: Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minority Students for the Year 2018-19' under 'Notice'
  3. Click on Maulana Azad National Fellowship' link
  4. Click on Apply Now
  5. Enter all the required information in the space provided
  6. Click on submit

Changes in minority scholarship criteria:

As per the latest circular, the UGC has now allowed all the candidates belonging to one of the minority communities who are enrolled for full time research programmes with UGC NET or CSIR-NET to apply for the scholarships.

"All candidates who belong to one of the minority communities i.e. Muslim, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist, Christian and Jain and who are enrolled for full time MPhil / Ph.D degree in Indian Universities/ Institutions/ Colleges recognized under Section 2(f) and Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956 and CBSE/NTA-UGC-NET/JRF or CSIR-NET/JRF may apply," said the latest notice issued by UGC. "Decision of the Commission with regard to selection of candidates for the award of fellowship shall be final," it added.

About the fellowship:

The objective of the scheme is to provide integrated five-year fellowships in the form of financial assistance to students from minority communities, as notified by the Central Government to pursue higher studies such as M.Phil. and Ph.D. at Indian Universities/Institutions/Colleges as indicated below:

A) Universities/Institutions/Colleges included under section 2(f) of UGC Act. 
B) Deemed to be Universities included under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 and eligible to receive grants-in-aid from UGC
