The University Grants Commission (UGC) had warned 21 Delhi University (DU) colleges, including Hindu College, Jesus and Mary College, Kamala Nehru College and Gargi College, that their financial grants would be withheld if they don't appoint regular principals in their institutions.

“After the issuance of the notice, only one college has appointed a regular principal while some others are in the process of doing the same. If they do not do so in the given time frame, then their grants and benefits will be stopped. A full-time Principal ensures having a good administration and maintaining an academic environment. UGC as an apex body is regularly focusing on the quality of higher education," UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain told ANI.

On August 13, 2018, the UGC sent notice to the colleges stating that many colleges had not complied with the directives of MHRD/UGC to appoint regular principals, adding interviews had not been held in most of the colleges showing lack of commitment on the part of college authorities for strengthening the administrative and academic atmosphere in the colleges.

The UGC had asked the colleges to expedite the appointment process and to inform the date of interview for the post of the principal latest by August 31, 2018.
