Indian varsities have improved their position in QS ranking that ranks all universities in the world. Of the total 197 departments at Indian varsities being ranked, 59 improved their position, with only 16 facing a drop.

Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar tweeted, "Our efforts to improve quality of education in higher education institutions are bearing fruit as 20 Indian institutions figure in the global top 100 Institutions in the subject wise categories as per QS."

89 Indian departments at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur,  Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and University of Delhi (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) among others has been ranked in the 51-200 ranking band.

The subject-wise list includes IIT Delhi and Bombay which fell in the bracket of 51-100 under the civil and structural engineering while IIT Kharagpur and Madras found a place in the 100-150 bracket for the same subject. IISc Bangalore and IIT Bombay found its place in the 50-100 bracket for chemical engineering subject, while IIT Delhi, Kharagpur and Kanpur were ranked under the 100-150 for the same subject.

Moreover, Delhi University was ranked 37 under the Development Studies subject and JNU was ranked under the bracket of 51-100 for History and Sociology.

According to QS, the strengths of Indian universities remain in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics subjects with India's eight IITs and IISc being ranked 104 times.

QS World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds an academic ranking agency which released this year's ranking on Wednesday.
