BJP's Sunny Deol files nomination from Punjab's Gurdaspur in presence of brother Bobby
Bollywood actor Sunny Deol, who recently joined the BJP, filed his nomination from Punjab’s Gurdaspur on Monday. His brother and actor Bobby Deol was also present at the district office as the ‘Gadar’ star filed his papers for the Lok Sabha Elections. Earlier in the day, Deol had gone to the Golden Temple and paid obeisance at the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. Sporting a navy blue turban and wearing a blue shirt, the 62-year-old offered prayers at the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple. He also offered prayers at the Durgiana Temple.
The BJP has fielded Sunny Deol, a Jat Sikh, from Gurdaspur constituency. Deol is pitted against sitting MP and Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar, AAP's Peter Masih and PDA's Lal Chand in electoral fight from Gurdaspur seat. After filling his nomination papers, Deol will be addressing a rally at PDA ground in Gurdaspur. Senior leadership of the BJP and the SAD will also be present in the rally. After the rally, he will leave for Mumbai for casting his vote.
Currently, the Gurdaspur constituency is represented by Congress MP Sunil Jakhar, who won the seat in the 2017 bypoll, which was necessitated after the death of Vinod Khanna in April that year.
The Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat had been represented by late actor Vinod Khanna for four-times--1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014.
Jakhar had defeated BJP candidate Swaran Salaria by a whopping margin of 1,93,219.
Before filing his nomination, Deol met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. Taking to Twitter, Modi appreciated Deol's "humility and deep sense of passion for a better India" while posting a picture with the latter. The tweet also includes a famous dialogue from Deol's 2001 period action drama film Gadar - 'Hindustan Zindabad Tha, Hai, Aur Rahega'. "What struck me about Sunny Deol is his humility and deep passion for a better India. Happy to have met him today. We are all rooting for his victory in Gurdaspur. Hindustan Zindabad Tha, Hai, Aur Rahega," Modi captioned the photo where the two can be seen smiling and shaking hands with each other.
While Modi was wearing a yellow kurta along with a matching saffron-white scarf, Deol is seen donning a white shirt and blue denim jeans in the picture.
