Amid intense political rift between the BJP and Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, the Kolkata Police on Wednesday allegedly detained BJP spokesperson Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga. There are reports that Bagga was picked up around 3 am on Wednesday and has been detained at New Market Police station in Kolkata. An image is going viral which purportedly shows Bagga sitting inside a police station in Kolkata. However, the police or the administration have not verified the claims.
Later, Bagga, who has a terrific Twitter presence shared his side of story on microblogging site. According to him, the police barged into his hotel room around 2am and took him away. Bagga alleged that the police was trying to link him with Kolkata violence during Amit Shah’s roadshow. “However, after not getting any evidence, they had to free me,” Bagga said.
BJP's IT in-charge Amit Malviya alleged that several BJP leaders, including Bagga, were detained in a midnight crackdown on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's instructions. “Mamata Banerjee ordered a midnight crack down on several BJP leaders in Kolkata, who were picked up in the middle of night, without due process of law being followed. Tajinder Bagga and several others are now in TMC’s illegal detention. #SaveBengalSaveDemocracy #FreeTajinderBagga,” he tweeted.
Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi, who is portraying PM Modi in a movie, also slammed Bengal government for the alleged action. “I can’t understand why a respected lady like Didi is behaving like Saddam Hussain! Ironically, democracy is under threat and in danger by Dictator Didi herself. First #PriyankaSharma & now #TajinderBagga. यह दीदीगिरी नही चलेगी ! #SaveBengalSaveDemocracy #FreeTajinderBagga (sic),” Oberoi said on Twitter.
