The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have decided to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2019 together in Assam. BJP leader Ram Madhav announced this decision after his late night meeting with AGP leaders Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta. BJP's Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present in the meeting.Â
Madhav said the BJP and the AGP have come together to defeat the Congress in the coming parliamentary elections and also added that the BPF will be the third partner in the alliance.

In January, the AGP snapped its ties with the saffron party after differences cropped up over the Citizenship Amendment Bill. There have been widespread protests across the Northeast region against the bill. The BJP and the AGP contested the Assam Assembly polls together in 2016 and won 60 and 14 seats respectively in the Assembly. The BPF won 12 seats and was the third partner in the alliance. The grand alliance of these three parties had ousted the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government.Â
According to sources, the BJP is likely to offer Barpeta and Kaliabor constituencies to the AGP. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP won 7 seats whereas the AGP couldn't open its account.Â
The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the dates for the Lok Sabha election 2019. The Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19. The votes will be counted on May 23.
