Sapna Choudhary joins Congress, likely to contest against Hema Malini from Mathura

Congress general secretary UP (East) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra meets Sapna Choudhary after the dance-singer joins the party.

Sapna Choudhary, the popular stage performer from Haryana, joined the Congress on Saturday. She joined the party in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee's member Narendra Rathi. Later, Congress general secretary UP (East) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met the dancer-singer. Choudhary is likely to contest the Lok Sabha elections against Bollywood legend Hema Malini from Mathura, sources said. On the choice of the Lok Sabha seat, the party sources said that Mathura has dominant Jat presence and Choudhary comes from the same background. Hence, she is the perfect candidate for the prestigious poll war. It should be noted that Choudhary had visited the Congress headquarters a few months back.

The dancing sensation from Haryana, who rose to fame with her ‘aakhya ka yo kaajal’ song, recently donated Rs 2 lakh to the families of Pulwama martyrs. Apart from her viral video, Choudhary is also known for her brief stint in popular TV show ‘Bigg Boss’ in 2017.

Her popularity can be gauged from the fact that Choudhary beat Deepika Padukone and Radhika Apte in the list of ‘most searched women online in 2018’. With 1.7 million followers, Choudhary’s glamorous makeover was one of the major Instagram trends in 2018.

Choudhary has a huge fan following and most of her shows are jam packed. In February, her song ‘Chetak’ crossed 80 million views on YouTube.  Some of her other superhit songs include ‘Teri Aakhya Ka Yo Kajal’, ‘Mera Chand,’ ‘Laad Piya Ke’ etc.

The record-breaking song -‘Teri Aakhya Ka Yo Kajal’- had clocked over 360 million views on YouTube. The development comes a day after the BJP announced its first list of candidates for the Lok Sabha poll.

BJP leader Hema Malini will contest the April-May general election from Mathura, her current parliamentary constituency. Malini's candidature was on expected lines as she had said earlier this year that she had got the "green signal from higher-ups".
