Congress won't allow Citizenship Bill if voted to power: Rahul Gandhi in Assam

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP's ideological mentor RSS for trying to attack the "history and culture" of Assam and promised that his party won't allow the Citizenship Amendment Bill if voted to power. Addressing an election rally in Assam's Golaghat, the Congress president also promised to restore the special category status of northeastern states and bring industrial policy for the region.

"Congress will not allow the Citizenship Amendment Bill if voted to power. We will restore the special status of northeastern states and bring an in industrial policy to make the region a manufacturing hub," Rahul Gandhi told a gathering in Golaghat.

Terming the 2019 Lok Sabha election a battle of ideologies, the Congress chief accused the ruling BJP and its ideological mentor RSS of attacking the history and culture of Assam. "This is a fight of ideologies. The RSS and BJP break the country but the Congress unites the nation. RSS and Nagpur (where RSS headquarters are located) are attacking Assam, its history, thinking and culture," Gandhi said.

Speaking about his ambitious NYAY scheme, Gandhi said that the Congress party worked for six months and spoke to world's top economists for the planning of the scheme that promises minimum income guarantee to the poor families.

"I asked Congress think tank to tell me how much money can the Congress govt put in people’s accounts? We worked for six months, spoke to world’s top economists, and planned. We came to the conclusion that Rs 72, 000 every year will be deposited directly to everyone’s account," he said.

Informing about the sources of funds for the scheme, the Congress leader said that they will come from the pockets of 'chor' businessmen who were "favoured" by 'chowkidar' Narendra Modi. "Funds for NYAY scheme will come from pockets of ‘chor’ businessmen favoured by ‘chowkidar’ Narendra Modi," he added.
