Lok Sabha Elections 2019: The elections for the 17th Lok Sabha will take place in seven phases from April 11 to May 19. The result will be declared on May 23. The Lok Sabha has 543 elected members and 91 constituencies will go for polls in the first phase on April 11. Voters in 97 seats will use their franchise in the second phase on April 18 whereas the third phase will be held on April 23 on 115 constituencies. The fourth phase will be held on April 29 (71 seats), fifth phase on May 6 (51 seats), sixth phase on May 12 (59 seats) and seventh phase on May 19 (59 seats). The elections are likely to be a very close contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). The Narendra Modi's BJP is contesting 437 Lok Sabha seats this time, the highest in its history, leaving the remaining seats (106) for its alliance partners. The saffron party has already announced all its candidates.

Several parties are contesting under the umbrella of NDA this election. The Shiv Sena (SHS) in Maharashtra is contesting on 23 seats whereas the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has fielded its candidates on 20 constituencies in Tamil Nadu. The Janata Dal-United (JDU) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) will contest on 17 and 6 seats respectively in Bihar. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will field its candidates on 10 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab while the BJP has left 2 seats for Apna Dal (Sonelal) in Uttar Pradesh. The other NDA partners are Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK: 7 seats in Tamil Nadu), Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK: 4 seats in Tamil Nadu), Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS: 4 seats in Kerala), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP: 3 seats in Assam), Bodoland People's Front (BPF: 1 seat in Assam), All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU: 1 seat in Jharkhand), Kerala Congress Thomas (KCT: 1 seat in Kerala), Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP: 1 seat in Nagaland), Puthiya Needhi Katchi (PNK: 1 seat in Tamil Nadu), Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC: 1 seat in Tamil Nadu), Puthiya Tamilagam (PT: 1 seat in Tamil Nadu), All India NR Congress (AINRC: 1 seat in Puducherry) and Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP: 1 seat in Rajasthan). The BJP also decided to support Independent candidate Sumalatha from Karnataka's Mandya seat. The party is also in talks with the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) and NISHAD Party for an alliance in Uttar Pradesh.
