Lok Sabha Polls Phase 4: Polling ends in 71 constituencies, 64% voter turnout recorded

The Stakes Are High For The Ruling BJP And Its Allies As It Had Swept 56 Of These Seats In 2014, Leaving Just Two For The Congress And The Rest For Other Opposition Parties Such As The Trinamool Congress (six) And The Biju Janata Dal (six).

New Delhi:

The fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections is taking place on Monday. As many as 12.79 crore voters will exercise their franchise in 71 constituencies spread over nine states. The states which are going to polls in Round 4 are - Maharashtra (17/48 seats), Rajasthan (13/25 seats), Uttar Pradesh (13/80 seats), West Bengal (8/42 seats), Madhya Pradesh (6/29 seats), Odisha (6/21 seats), Bihar (5/40 seats), Jharkhand (3/14 seats) and Jammu and Kashmir (1/6). Apart from these, the fourth and final phase of Odisha Assembly elections is scheduled to be held in 42 segments on Monday. 

The voting will take place between 7 am and 6 pm in most of the constituencies to decide the fate of around 961 candidates in nine states all over the country. The Election Commission has set up 1.40 lakh polling booths/stations and has made elaborate security arrangements.

42.03 per cent polling till 3 pm in Maharashtra. This is the fourth and last phase of polling in the state.

The Supreme Court on Monday allowed the Centre to circulate a letter for adjournment in Tuesday's scheduled hearing on Rafale review pleas.  A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi allowed the Centre's counsel to circulate the letter among parties which include petitioners who have filed review pleas.

Facing a contempt notice for his remarks in the Rafale deal case, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has filed a fresh affidavit in the Supreme Court but has refused to apologise once again. Shortly after, Union Minsiter Smriti Irani said, "The way the Cong president has agreed to his mistake of insulting the PM shows that India doesn;t tolerte lies."
