Lok Sabha Elections: PM Modi, Amit Shah among 40 star BJP campaigners in Uttar Pradesh

PM Modi, Amit Shah among 40 star BJP campaigners in Uttar Pradesh

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday released its star-studded of 40 campaigners for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. 

The list includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. 

The list of star campaigners for the politically-crucial state also includes chief minister Yogi Adityanath, former Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Hema Malini and Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. 

Uttar Pradesh, which send the highest number of Lok Sabha MPs, will see the top leadership of both the BJP and the Congress trying their fortunes in the much-awaited Lok Sabha elections. 

PM Modi will contest the Lok Sabha election from Varanasi, the seat he represents in Parliament. Rajnath Singh has been fielded from Lucknow Lok Sabha seat. 

Smriti Irani will reprise her electoral battle with Congress president Rahul Gandhi from Amethi, where she had lost to him in 2014 but was seen to have put up a spirited fight.

The BJP is set to face a stiff challenge from the SP-BSP alliance in the state. The SP and BSP will contest 37 seats each while they have annoiunced to not field any candidate on Amethi and Rae Bareli seats -- the two bastions of the Congress.  

Lok Sabha elections will begin on April 11 and continue for over a month till May 19 across seven phases, followed by counting of votes on May 23. 

The polling will be held on April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19 for 543 Lok Sabha seats across the country in which nearly 90 crore voters would be eligible to vote.
