New Delhi:

Congress general secretary for Uttar Pradesh (East) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra upped the ante against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday saying ‘nobody wants a PM who speaks only to celebrities.’

“You may have seen him interviewing with big, noteworthy actors but you will never see him with people. I went to Varanasi recently, and I came to know that in the past five years, the Prime Minister hasn’t gone to any village,” Priyanka Gandhi said while addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh.

She also asked the prime minister, who will file his nomination from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat on April 26, to speak to the poor farmers.

Priyanka has been campaigning in several parts of Uttar Pradesh after taking a political plunge earlier this year. Her statement is being seen as a direct dig at PM Modi for his latest 'non-political' interview with actor Akshay Kumar.

Earlier, Priyanka Gandhi termed PM Modi as ‘Pradhan Prachar Mantri’ and accused the BJP of ‘wasting drinking water’ to clean roads in Banda, an arid town in Uttar Pradesh's Bundelkhand region.

In a tweet, Priyanka Gandhi said, "Is he a 'chowkidar' (watchman) or a 'shahanshah' (emperor) coming from Delhi."

Her comments drew a sharp reaction from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who said her statements show that the fear of defeat has gripped the Congress.

Meanwhile, sources claim that Priyanka - who has been actively targeting PM Modi - may file his nominations from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat on April 29 after visiting the Kaal Bhairav Mandir.

Sources further revealed that in case Priyanka contests the polls from Varanasi, the opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh will withdraw the nomination of its candidate Shalini Yadav. The SP-BSP-RLD alliance had announced Shalini Yadav as its joint candidate for the constituency on Monday.
