BJP leader Mahesh Sharma has triggered a controversy for terming Congress general secretary Uttar Pradesh-East Priyanka Gandhi “Pappu ki Pappi” during a public rally in Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh. In a purported video shared by news agency ANI, the BJP leader is also seen mocking West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy.

"Pappu wants to become prime minister and now Pappu’s Pappi has also joined him. What new things she will do?" Sharma is heard saying in the video while referring to Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka.

"Even if Mamata Banerjee comes here and performs Kathak, who will pay attention to her? If Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy comes and sings, who will pay attention to him?" the BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar constituency said.

The below the belt remark against Priyanka and Banerjee - two prominent women politicians - from the country’s culture minister has come on a day when the Congress leader embarked on a ‘Ganga yatra’ to launch her party’s campaign for the coming Lok Sabha elections.

The sexist comments of the BJP leader drew flak on Twitter where several users slammed the saffron party and its leader PM Modi who talks about woman empowerment while his ministers use such derogatory remarks against them.
