Priyanka wanted to contest from Mumbai NW seat, was disappointed after party denied ticket

Priyanka Chaturvedi quit the Congress a day after criticising it for reinstating leaders who harassed her.

Priyanka Chaturvedi, who recently quit the Congress party and joined right-wing Shiv Sena, wanted to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North West constituency and was disappointed after her name was not considered. The Congress party has fielded former Mumbai Congress Committee chief Sanjay Nirupam from the constituency.

"I did not seek a ticket from Mumbai North or Mathura but Mumbai NW. I was disappointed but not miffed," Priyanka said in tweet. She, however, defended her decision and said that there was nothing wrong in being ambitious. "Last I checked ambition is not a curse," the former Congress leader added.

Chaturvedi, one of the Congress's most high-profile spokespersons, quit the Congress party a day after critcising it for revoking the suspension of several Uttar Pradesh leaders, who had harrassed her during a press conference in Mathura.

"Deeply saddened that lumpen goons get preference in @incindia over those who have given their sweat and blood. Having faced brickbats and abuse across board for the party but yet those who threatened me within the party getting away with not even a rap on their knuckles is unfortunate," she had said in a tweet, giving hints about her decision to quit the party.

In less than 24 hours after resigning from the Congress, she joined the Shiv Sena in presence of its president Uddhav Thackeray. "I gave ten years of my life to a political party at the end of which I felt extremely let down for not standing up on issues which are important for women's rights," the 39-year-old leader said.
